"A lovely place to work"
Pros
Having had a career in a commercial industry within the private sector for many years, working within the education sector was a real change in culture. What drew me to Bridgewater School, having researched the school prior to interview through existing parents and another member of staff, was their ethos of championing and support. And, having now worked here for over 7 years, I still see evidence of this everywhere I go within the school. I find the Senior Leadership Team to be accessible, supportive and incredibly honest and fair. Flexibility is provided where possible for every member of staff and is very much appreciated. Ideas and creativity are encouraged and there are many ways in which you can contribute and help the school, staff and students to succeed. The teachers are amazing - regularly going above and beyond to help their students to succeed, and the support team that I work alongside are some of my favourite people. In terms of the school site itself, it is a lovely place to work. It has character and charm, is very well kept and provides a welcoming space for all.
Cons
The school has been developed around the existing Drywood Hall which, being a listed period property, does not easily lend itself to modernisation. However the additions to the site, student facilities and learning opportunities are cleverly thought out and provide exactly what is needed for the children.
"Poor management and bullying of staff"
Pros
Some very talented teaching staff to work alongside, let down so badly by a poorly run and bullying mentality en grained within the management.
Cons
As a previous member of the staffing body and friend to families still connected ; I have maintained increasing concerns regarding the questionable ethics that appear inherent within the BWS business. At first, I naively smiled at the anecdotal staffroom reference to the ‘Bridgewater Infirmary’. This was the fictional explanation for the alarming number of employees (across all sectors) that seemed to just vanish over night. Sharing of these ‘stories’ served as a staffroom induction for many new employees; with a warning to keep your head low and do not question the management. On numerous occasions, I heard the question posed, “ who do you think will be next?” In my opinion, the inconsistencies in the treatment of staff, pupils and families is disconcerting. I witnessed an allegation made against one employee, the condemnation of which mirrored the judicial system of Salem. It appeared to me that staff ‘connections’ had a direct impact upon status and recognition. I turned a blind eye to the whispers of nepotism, but couldn’t ignore the inconsistent ‘decisions’ made surrounding the discipline of staff and students alike. Here is a business that prides itself upon being ‘family friendly’, however, my experience would be ‘If you are from a family that fits’. Bridgewater school has a very talented teaching staff, it is therefore unfortunate that perceived bullying is a dark cloud overhead. Bridgewater School – ‘Where individuals count?’
